What is the minumum requirement for first aiders in the workplace?

HLTAID003 Provide First Aid is now considered the minimum level of achievment for workplace first aiders.

As well as comprehensively covering Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) workplace first aid also includes the following areas of first aid response:

  • allergic reaction
  • anaphylaxis
  • bleeding control
  • choking and airway obstruction
  • envenomation, using pressure immobilisation
  • fractures, sprains and strains, using arm slings, roller bandages or other appropriate immobilisation techniques
  • respiratory distress, including asthma
  • shock
  • abdominal injuries
  • allergic reaction
  • anaphylaxis
  • basic care of a wound
  • bleeding control
  • burns
  • cardiac conditions, including chest pain
  • choking and airway obstruction
  • crush injuries
  • diabetes
  • dislocations
  • drowning
  • envenomation
  • environmental impact, including hypothermia, hyperthermia, dehydration and heat stroke
  • eye and ear injuries
  • fractures
  • febrile convulsions
  • head, neck and spinal injuries
  • minor skin injuries
  • needle stick injuries
  • poisoning and toxic substances
  • respiratory distress, including asthma
  • seizures, including epilepsy
  • shock
  • soft tissue injuries, including strains and, sprains
  • stroke
  • unconsciousness

In order to complete this course you must be able to apply CPR techniques on the floor, 2 minutes of CPR on an adult manikin and 2 minutes of CPR on an infant manikin.

Other assessmets include a theory test (Can be done online) and a series of scenario based emergency first aid incidents.
